Our Vaccination Protocal

DISCLAIMER: The following material is not intended as a substitute for the advice of a physician or vet. This information is not intended as a substitute for the reader's independent judgment and personal responsibility. Health issues are far too important to delegate to anyone else. It is highly recommended you seek information and counsel from as wide a variety of sources as possible, as in the end YOU make the decisions.

Vaccinations

It is highly advised that kitten(s)/ cat(s) not be vaccinated, at any time, with any of the following vaccines:

       * Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV);
       * Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP);
       * Ringworm;
       * Bordetella (Bordetellosis);
       * Chlamydia (Chlamydiosis); or
       * Any newly developed vaccine.

   In addition, they should not be vaccinated:

       * On the same day of neuter/spay, any other surgery or other procedure, no matter how minor;
       * On day within thirty (30) days from any surgical procedure;
       * If he/she is suffering from any illness, however minor;
       * If he/she is suffering from any stressful situation such as a move to a new location, at the time of addition of a new cat or other animal to the household;
       * With any vaccine between the shoulder blades (NOTE: Vaccines containing antigens panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus I, feline calicivirus (+/-Chlamydia) should be administered in the right fore region (RF) or be given intranasally. (IN); Vaccines containing rabies antigen (+/- other antigens) should be administered in the right rear region (RR) according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Rabies=Right); or
       * With a rabies vaccine in conjunction with any other vaccine;

   The following vaccinations pursuant to the following schedule are acceptable:

       * Rabies as required by law and no more frequently or sooner than six months of age; Some people determine the risk factor in their particular area, before deciding whether or not to vaccinate for rabies. For instance, in my county, there have been just 3 cases of rabies in the last 12 years.
       * One three-in-one vaccination (panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus) administered at approximately six months old if the kitten is in excellent health and under no stress. We vaccinate our kittens at 12 weeks so that they may be adopted out vaccinated. I would prefer to wait, however.
       * You may choose to continue vaccinating over the course of the cats life, but I reccomend that this be done no more then every 3 years, at most.

Parasite Prevention

Fleas:

       *Vitamin B- Administered orally.  Heres one source of vit b treats for cats/ dogs:
http://www.fleatreat.com/faqs.html
       *Diatomaceus Earth- (food grade). Commonly available at many stores. (Just make sure you get FOOD GRADE D.E. and not the stuff meant for swimming pools!) -Sprinkle on carpets and beds. Vacuum up after about 3 days. Repeat process at least once to make sure you get survivors. Follow up 1x a month to prevent reinfestation. Also sprinkle directly on your pet and massage into fur. Just be careful not to get into eyes and nose as it will have a drying/ irritating effect on mucus membranes and respiratory system.
       *Flea repellant sleep pillows- 2 parts sage or rosemary, 1 part catnip, 1 part chamomile. Stuff into you cats favorite pillow/ bed pad.

Worms/ protozoa:

*Diatomaceus Earth- Administered orally. Can be sprinkled on food @ I tspn/ day for 30 days. http://oe1.com/index3.htm
       *Coccidia treatment- A mixture of the following:
"Olive leaf, mustard seed, black seed, pau d'arco, cloves, alcohol, and distilled water". http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/wholisticproduct.html#COCCIDIA

**Please note that I do not advocate that cats be wormed except in instances of infestation. A healthy cat/ kitten fed a wholesome diet and living in a home in which fleas are kept under control with a natural pesticide such as DE will not have problems with internal parasites. Many of the cats and kittens that come into our rescue are very malnurished and heavily infested with worms. We treat such animals with 1-2 doses of Drontal.

Why Should We Avoid Using Chemicals and Pesticides On Our Pets?
